How UX audits set the stage for digital renovations

Would you repair your car without first knowing what was wrong with it? Would you hire a plumber to replace the pipes in your home before knowing that they were, in fact, the source of a leak?

Not a chance, right?

Repairs and renovations are expensive, and before we decide to spend our money attempting to fix anything, we must understand both the nature of the problems we’re trying to fix and how our money will address them.

The same is true for website and digital platform renewal projects. All too often, organizations dive headfirst into redesign projects with their own sense of what might be wrong. For example, they may move into the process with notions such as these:

“The website looks dated”
“We don’t have any product information on our home page”
“There’s too much text on our careers page”
“We need more visuals on our services page”
“Nobody can find our contact form”

While many of these concerns may in fact be valid, organizations take a huge risk by beginning any type of redesign efforts without first taking a holistic, well-informed look at the current state.

How an audit mitigates this risk

A UX (user experience) audit is a low-cost, high-yielding investment that organizations can make to ensure that the resources they allocate to a renewal project achieve the most value. The output from an audit provides a well-rounded evaluation of key success indicators, including:

  • Usability
  • Conversion
  • Content performance
  • Layout + visual design
  • Ease of interaction
  • Navigation + information architecture

Think of it as a mechanic’s diagnostic report on your vehicle. You won't spend money replacing the fuel pump if your gas tank is leaking. Similarly, approaching a redesign of your website focused only on the visual design (the look and feel) will not address the deeper issues contributing to poor performance in areas like conversion, for example.
